The Sauna

A Mobile Barrel Sauna Rental Experience in Nisswa, MN

Crafted by hand in Northern MN

We love the barrel style sauna. Not only beautiful to look at, the barrel design also lends itself to an amazing sauna experience.  The sauna is built from a family business where the art of cooperage was passed down.  We feel lucky to have and enjoy one of their creations.

A barrel sauna design allows air flow to naturally circulate through the sauna room. The hot air rises in the circular sauna room and gently curls down each side of the sauna providing a natural convection. This provides a very even heat distribution.

In a square sauna room the heat gets trapped at the top, beyond where the user can experience the heat whereas in the barrel sauna the curvature of the room allows the upper heat to be pushed down the sides and back into the sauna as new heat rises. This brings the higher temperatures lower into the sauna and allows the heat to flow evenly through the room.

The curved walls also provide a relaxing position while enjoying the hot cycle.

Meet Birch Sauna

Why Birch?

The birch tree can grow in any climate and adapt to even the toughest conditions.

With Birch Sauna, so can you!

Birch trees are known as a pioneer species, a symbol of rebirth, new beginnings and growth. It’s a sacred tree and is thought to have very protective influences.  Because of their ability to colonize disrupted or damaged ecosystems, they were some of the first trees to appear after the glaciers receded. They can be found growing among the charred ruins of a forest devastated by fire. The ability to survive a harsh environment has a metaphorical meaning across cultures, representing an individual’s resilience in the face of hardship.

Sauna practice includes a similar story; stress relief is often one of the most commonly cited reasons for sauna.  One of the other very important reasons is temperature acclimation, which we in MN definitely need!  Sauna can help our body deal with temperature acclimation.  We use a lot of energy in thermal acclimation normally. By using the sauna we are able to train our bodies to acclimatize to heat & cold changes more efficiently.

Second, mythology suggests the birch tree represents grace, purity, family connections, protection, healing and new life.
For these reasons, we felt the birch tree was a perfect homage to represent our saunas. In the  landscape, birch woodlands have a gentle presence – they are among the most resilient of trees, bending with the strongest gales and flexing – but rarely breaking.

This flexing without breaking is very true to everyday life.  At Birch Sauna we aim to provide you relaxation, connection to others and to self, & a feeling that you can bend but you won’t break. Common sauna practices are often used to help us understand that the adverse does not need to hold us back. You can handle this heat and you can handle this cold. You can handle anything.  We hope you leave the Birch Sauna experience rejuvenated; filled with new connections, stories, warm hearts (and bodies) but most of all the feeling that challenges you are met with can’t hold you back from the life you want. You can bend but you will not break.

A sauna not only feels good, it’s good for your body. Whether it’s the physiological changes that occur during the warmth of a sauna, or if it’s simply the time spent in the calming and still retreat of the sauna, every seasoned sauna bather agrees – it feels wonderful!

As we progress through our stressful everyday lives, the sauna provides a pampering retreat - where we can relax and restore the body and soul.

Birch Sauna will provide

The sauna can literally

be placed anywhere
